Cooperation between Ukraine and Indonesia in the sphere of culture and humanities

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Indonesia (RI) has traditionally been focused in the areas of education, tourism and culture.

The countries historically supported the independence of one-another at key historical moments. In 1991, Indonesia became the fourth country in Southeast Asia which recognized the independence of Ukraine. In 1946, during the struggle for Indonesian de-colonialization and the recognition of its independence by the international community, Indonesia appealed to the UN Security Council to consider and resolve the Indonesian issue. The Ukrainian delegation to the UN brought up the Indonesian question in the UN Security Council. Eventually (in 1949), the dispute was decided in favor of Indonesia. During 1946-1949 Ukrainian diplomats played a leading role in the campaign for the de-colonialization of Indonesia.

One of the main areas of cooperation is education, including through student exchange programs "Darmasiswa" (sending students from Ukraine to Indonesia) and AIESEC (sending students from Indonesia to Ukraine). In the 2017-2018 academic year 17 Ukrainian students take part in "Darmasiswa" and more than 10 Indonesian students participate in the AIESEC programs in Ukraine.

In 2015-2017 five memorandums of understanding were signed between the higher educational establishments of Ukraine and Indonesia.

Tourism holds significant prospects for bilateral cooperation. Indonesian side introduced a visa-free regime for Ukrainian tourists in April 2016 as well as Ukraine introduced a system for obtaining "visas on arrival" and "electronic visas" in 2017 and 2018 respectively. These steps contributed to the development of bilateral relations in the field of tourism.

In recent years Ukraine was presented in the leading festivals, charity fairs, exhibitions and other cultural events in Indonesia. Ukrainian films regularly take part in the EU film festival "Europe on Screen". In 2015-2018 Ukrainian movies "The Guide", "The Unbroken", "My Grandmother Fanny Kaplan" and "The Nest of the Turtledove" aroused the interest of the Indonesian public. Ukraine took part in exhibitions and cultural events of prominent universities, in particular, University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, Parahyangan Catholic University etc.

In connection with the Yogyakarta earthquake of 2006 Ukraine provided humanitarian aid to Indonesia.

In 2015 Indonesian pharmaceutical companies donated humanitarian assistance to a hospital treating the wounded victims of the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine.
