Ukraine emphasizes inadmissibility of repressions in the territory of temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea
24 September 2014 12:39

On September 22 the headquarters of the UN hosted the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.

Our state delegation headed by Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin took part in the round table on the implementation of the rights of indigenous peoples at national and local level. The Foreign Minister in his speach emphasized the inadmissibility of repressions against the Crimean Tatars in the territory of temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol. Pavlo Klimkin informed the participants in the Conference of the measures taken by the Government of Ukraine to protect the rights and interests of the Crimean Tatars as an indigenous people of Crimea in the context of implementation of obligations undertaken by Ukraine according to the Declaration of the rights of indigenous peoples.

The conference was attended by the Crimean Tatar Mejlis represented by its President Refat Chubarov and Representative of the President of Ukraine on the issues of Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemiliyev. In his speech, Mr Chubarov condemned the actions of the Russian Federation aimed at preventing the participation of the Mejlis and other indigenous organizations in the Conference on Indigenous Peoples and proposed the creation of the UN mechanism to monitor the rights of Crimean Tatars as an indigenous people of Crimea.

At the Conference, the final document was approved, which secured international mechanisms incorporating the interests of the indigenous peoples of the world in making decisions that affect their lives, as well as the practical implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
