President: People have chosen democratic forces and supported the path of reforms at these elections
27 Oktober 2015 11:07

Speaking of local elections of October 25, President Petro Poroshenko emphasized that the vast majority of voters had supported democratic forces providing an opportunity to create pro-Ukrainian coalitions in local councils and continue the reformation of the country.

The Head of State called it important that despite certain predictions, the revenge of non-democratic forces hadn’t taken place. “I would like to thank the Ukrainian nation for a responsible choice in support of democratic forces and reforms. Moreover, the split of Ukraine expected by many people hasn’t taken place. The attempt of Russia to create the fifth pro-Russian column inside Ukraine has failed,” Petro Poroshenko said.

“The Ukrainian nation has crossed the Rubicon after these elections and there is no turning back,” the Head of State said.

The President noted that the responsibility of Ukrainian nation paved the way to reforms. “The responsibility of voters lets us continue reforms. I consider it a support for reforms, decentralization and increase of powers and responsibility of local councils. I am glad that the majority of voters supported these approaches,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

According to the President, the main proof of democratic character of local elections is the absence of administrative influence. “The main assessment is the assessment of international observers and our NGOs regarding the absence of administrative influence during these elections. It has been the first such assessment, which motivates us to keep on ensuring free expression of will of our citizens,” the Head of State noted.

The main task of newly elected pro-Ukrainian coalitions is to prevent destabilization inside Ukraine. “For today, we should simply ensure responsible and consolidated approach of political forces. I believe that the elections of October 25 provide substantial grounds for this,” the President said.

The President called non-holding of elections in Mariupol unacceptable. He suggested that the Parliament make amendments to the legislation in order to ensure free expression of will in cities like Mariupol, Krasnoarmiysk etc. “We should make amendments to the electoral law that will ensure the electoral process and prevent electoral mistakes,” the Head of State stressed.

According to him, it is particularly important in the context of the return of the Ukrainian authorities in the occupied part of Donbas. “The only way to do this is to hold democratic elections,” the President concluded.

Petro Poroshenko thanked all voters for “letting the country ensure high level of electoral culture despite extremely difficult conditions and numerous challenges”.
