Day of National Unity of Ukraine
On January 22nd 2014 Ukraine marks the 95th anniversary of the adoption of the Unification Act by the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic, thus forming the united state of Ukraine. This event is known in history books as the “Day of Unity of Ukraine”, it personifies the eternal aspiration of our people to be united and indivisible.
In early January 1919 the Ukrainian National Council approved the amalgamation of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic, which resulted in the creation of the unified state of Ukraine. The law recognizing the date as the Day of Ukrainian Sovereignty was passed on January 24 1919. In 1999 this day was officially recognized as the Day of Unity of Ukraine. Despite the failure of the independence movement in 1921, the Unification Act of January 22, 1919 remained a pivot event in the history of Ukrainian sovereignty. It continued to define Ukraine’s national consolidation process and the aspiration of our people for national and spiritual unity in the course of the following decades.
