President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that in the issues of state development and determination of the foreign political course, he will not let anyone outside Ukraine put pressure on the country and will listen first of all to the opinion of the people of Ukraine. "We will not let anyone put pressure on Ukraine in the determination of the vector of our state's development," Petro Poroshenko said in the interview to the German television and radio broadcasting company ARD.
The President noted that the majority of people in the country demanded immediate reforms from the authorities. "We have to reform the country, improve the investment climate, implement the Association Agreement with the EU. 75% Ukrainians stand for that," Petro Poroshenko noted. The President reminded that Ukrainians had stood for the European values - the rule of law, human rights protection, freedom of speech - during the protests in November 2013 - February 2014. Ukrainians have chosen the European path of state development. That's why the Strategy of Reforms 2020 is aimed at applying for membership in the EU in 6 years. Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude to the EU and other countries for their unity and solidarity with Ukraine.
At the same time, the President emphasized that the main challenge for Ukraine was to counter the aggression and defend its integrity. "I always try to save the dialogue and keep the "doors of peace" open," he said.
The President is confident that the world needs new security system, for the post-war structures are no more efficient and are not capable of protecting any country. Ukraine is ready to take part in this process. "The new security system will not be created against somebody, for example Russia. It will be created to protect its territories, prevent the aggression and violation of borders, have efficient mechanisms for the preservation of peace," the Head of State stressed.
Still, Petro Poroshenko said that NATO remained the system capable of protecting its members. Commenting on the possibility of Ukraine's membership in the given organization, the President emphasized that the issue was not in the statements, but in the necessity of reforms. "We must do everything for the country, the level of citizens' income, the GDP level, the investments into the defense complex and the level of the Armed Forces to meet the criteria of the countries willing to be the members of NATO," he said. Petro Poroshenko added that the last 4 years had demonstrated the falsity of the non-aligned model for Ukraine.
